What does a dermatologist do?
A dermatologist is a specialist who deals with diseases of the skin and its appendages - sebaceous glands, sweat glands, hair and nails. He treats, among others, acne vulgaris and rosacea, viral skin diseases, psoriasis, ringworm, dandruff, alopecia or atopic dermatitis. A dermatologist can also be approached with suspected sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis, chlamydiosis or gonorrhea. Another important task of a dermatologist is the evaluation of pigmented nevi (known as moles).
When to make an appointment?
An appointment with a dermatologist should be made in the following cases, among others:
- disturbing lesions on the skin (spots, papules, blisters, etc.);
- suspected diseases of the skin, hair, nails;
- skin problems, e.g., broken capillaries, discoloration, pimples;
- excessively oily or dry skin;
- excessive hair loss;
- desire to check the condition of pigmented nevi;
- checking the treatment of chronic skin diseases.
Course of a visit to a dermatologist
During the consultation, the dermatologist:
- takes a history;
- conducts a dermatological examination;
- makes a diagnosis and informs about further treatment,
- makes referrals for examinations, consultations with other specialists, hospitalizations;
- issues sick leave.
A consultation for adults lasts 15 minutes.
Medical history
In the first instance, the doctor will want to obtain information about your health. You can expect such questions as:
- How long has the problem you are presenting with been present?
- Do you suffer from any chronic conditions?
- Do you take any medications or use dietary supplements on a regular basis?
- Does your family have a history of skin diseases (e.g. psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo)?
- What is your daily skin care, diet?
- Do you have a problem with allergies?
After taking a history, the doctor will carefully examine your skin, hair or nails (depending on the problem you are presenting).
Examination of pigmented nevi at the dermatologist
If a birthmark seems particularly suspicious to you - for example, it has changed its color, has blurred and irregular edges, has become convex, or swelling has appeared around it - visit a dermatologist. The doctor will examine them with a special device, the so-called dermatoscope, which allows you to see the lesions at 10 times magnification.
With the examination it is possible to detect skin cancers early, including the dangerous melanoma. To inspect nevi, you can also make an appointment for a video dermatoscopy, which allows for an even more accurate assessment.
Opt for a dermatoscopy or video dermatoscopy especially if:
- you tan often or use a tanning bed;
- you have a fair complexion and many pigmented nevi;
- there have been cases of skin cancer among your closest relatives.
Remember! Specialists recommend that a control examination of pigmented nevi should be performed at least once a year. This is an important part of cancer prevention.
Dermatologist - telemedicine
A telemedicine consultation can be used by any patient, regardless of location and previous medical history.
During the telephone consultation, the doctor will complete any services that are remotely possible. However, during the course of the medical interview, it may turn out that an in-patient visit is necessary, without which a correct diagnosis and selection of treatment cannot be made.
