Thyroid ultrasound - what is the test?
Ultrasound of the thyroid gland is used to evaluate the structure of this gland. It reveals:
- size (volume of the thyroid gland, dimensions of the lobes, thickness of the isthmus - the structure connecting the thyroid lobes);
- parenchymal echogenicity (ability to reflect high-frequency sound waves);
- echostructure;
- presence of focal lesions and nodules in the parenchyma;
- number, size, shape and echostructure of neck lymph nodes.
Thyroid ultrasound is the primary imaging study in patients with suspected thyroid disorders. It is also helpful in differentiating autoimmune and non-autoimmune thyroid diseases.
Ultrasound examination uses the phenomenon of reflection of ultrasound waves from the structure of organs - it is a non-invasive technique, and the examination itself is painless and safe.
Indications for thyroid ultrasound:
- enlargement of the gland;
- palpable to the touch nodule or nodular goiter;
- incidental finding of a focal thyroid lesion during imaging studies performed for other indications;
- control of the size of nodules or benign focal lesions of the thyroid gland;
- monitoring the results of treatment.
Thyroid ultrasound is also performed to select the area for fine-needle aspiration biopsy, and during biopsy to monitor the position of the needle.
Course of the examination
During a thyroid ultrasound, the doctor applies a special gel to the patient's neck to obtain good-quality images. The application of the gel may cause discomfort due to coldness and a sticky feeling, but these sensations pass as soon as the examination is completed.
The examination takes several minutes.
- The examination does not require any special preparation from the patient. It is only worth bearing in mind that it will be necessary to expose the examined area and remove jewelry from the neck.
- You should have the results of previous thyroid examinations (if performed) with you.
- There are no significant contraindications to the test.
- A referral for the examination is not required.
- The result of the examination (photo with description) is given to the patient immediately.
