What is worth knowing about breast ultrasound?
Breast ultrasound is an imaging method using ultrasound waves. The examination is non-invasive and safe. It can be performed in pregnant and breastfeeding patients, as well as in women who have breast implants.
The examination is used to assess the structure of the mammary gland (breast). It allows detection of cysts, lipomas and adenomas, among others. It is usually an examination used in women before the age of 40, having breasts composed predominantly of glandular tissue. Breast ultrasound is also often complementary to mammography.
When to perform a breast ultrasound?
- Prophylactically - once a year or as indicated by the doctor.
- Controlling in case of previously diagnosed benign lesions.
- In case of the appearance of a palpable lump in the breast.
- In case of symptoms such as breast pain and nipple discharge.
- As an adjunct to mammography - when indicated by a doctor.

The recommendation for regular breast ultrasound also extends to very young women - the first time to go for an examination should be as early as 20 years of age. Patients without breast lesions are most often recommended to have the examination every year or every two years. Women with a family history of breast cancer should especially remember to report for the examination. |
Important information
- The duration of the examination is about 15 minutes.
- No referral is required. You should bring with you the results of previous breast examinations (ultrasound, mammography, biopsy - if performed).
- If possible, the examination is best performed between the 5th and 10th day of the menstrual cycle.
- The examination does not require special preparation.
- The examination can also be performed in men.
- The result of the breast ultrasound is given to the patient in the form of a medical description along with a photo immediately after the examination. All documentation is printed at the visit. The result description is also available online.
