When to see an ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, dry eye syndrome and cataracts. This specialist also deals with the correction of vision defects, including astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness. Consultation can also be used via tele-optics.
Indications for consultation with an ophthalmologist
Consultation with a specialist is indicated if there is:
- deterioration of visual acuity;
- darkness in front of the eyes;
- double vision;
- excessively frequent blinking;
- inflammation of the eyelids and conjunctiva;
- congestion of the eye;
- itching and burning of the eyeball;
- squinting while reading;
- visual field disturbances;
- photophobia;
- severe orbital pain;
- severe and recurrent headache.
It is also recommended to see an ophthalmologist every year or every two years for an eye check-up.
Scope of the visit
During the consultation, the ophthalmologist:
- takes a thorough history, including complaints, past and present illnesses, and medications taken on a regular basis;
- performs the necessary examinations;
- makes diagnoses;
- gives medical recommendations;
- issues prescriptions;
- issues referrals for laboratory and imaging tests;
- issues sick leave.
Tests that an ophthalmologist can perform during a consultation are:
- visual acuity testing;
- computerized eye examination;
- measurement of intraocular pressure;
- examination of the fundus of the eye;
- checking ocular mobility;
- Schirmer test (examination of tear secretion);
- examination by means of graphic charts;
- color vision,
- spatial vision.
The consultation is for adults. It lasts 15 minutes.
The doctor decides on the prescription for glasses and what tests will be performed during the visit. This depends, among other things, on the visual defect or condition with which the patient reports. It may also be that more than one visit will be necessary.
All ophthalmology offices at the Damian Medical Center are equipped with slit lamps. A slit lamp with a biomicroscope allows examination of the structures of the anterior part of the eye - the eyelid, sclera, conjunctiva, iris, lens and cornea.
A visit to an ophthalmologist does not require special preparation. You should bring with you an identity document and the results of previous eye examinations.
You should arrive no later than 15 minutes before the appointment.
Implementation of the service is possible only at the medical facility indicated during the purchase.
Ophthalmologist - telemedicine consultation
A telemedicine consultation can be used by any patient, regardless of location and previous treatment history.
During the telephonic consultation, the doctor will complete any services that can be performed remotely. However, during the course of the medical interview, it may turn out that an in-patient visit is necessary, without which a correct diagnosis and treatment selection cannot be made.
The specialist will try to connect with the patient three times.
