Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas. It regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, among other things. It is produced in response to an increase in blood glucose concentration after eating a meal.
Glucose is a simple sugar, obtained by the persistence of complex carbohydrates (sugars), which are one of the components of food. Glucose is absorbed and transported with the blood into the body. However, in order for it to enter the cell, insulin is needed.
Insulin can be supplemented if deficient, but always under the supervision of a doctor.
Blood insulin levels
In the body, insulin has numerous important functions. One of them is to regulate the rate at which glucose is consumed by human tissues, insulin lowers blood glucose levels. Another function of this hormone is to promote the conversion of carbohydrates into fats and the synthesis of proteins.
Deficiencies or deficiencies of insulin can lead to the development of type II diabetes.
Indications for testing insulin levels?
Insulin concentration measurement is performed:
- to assess the body's insulin sensitivity and confirm insulin resistance,
- in the diagnosis of hypoglycemia (hypoglycemia), or low blood glucose levels;
- helpfully in the diagnosis of insulinoma (a tumor arising from pancreatic islet cells);
Check the next tab to see who is at high risk for insulin resistance.
Getting ready for an insulin test
Preparation for the test is very important, because in the case of an incorrect approach to the procedure, the insulin level test may not be performed or the result obtained will be unreliable.
A few days before the insulin test
- Do not drink alcohol 2-3 days before the test.
- Refrain from drinking coffee and tea at least 12 hours before the collection.
- Avoid stress as much as possible, which can stimulate the body to produce insulin.
On the day of the blood insulin test
Stay fasting - that is, refrain from eating for about 12 hours before testing your blood sugar. In the morning, drink water, a glass maximum. Blood for testing is taken in the morning. Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, blood should be drawn before taking your morning dose of medication. Immediately before the collection, rest in a sitting position for 10-15 minutes.
- Sampling the blood takes only a few seconds.

A glucose test is a basic diagnostic blood test used to assess the level of sugar (glucose) in the body. It is performed to detect and monitor type 1 and type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and other carbohydrate metabolism disorders. The test involves collecting a blood sample, usually from a vein in the elbow area.
