During the diagnosis of infection, a CRP (C-reactive protein) analysis is carried out. The doctor may choose to perform this test if there is a suspicion of infection, whether it is parasitic, fungal, bacterial or viral. CRP levels are associated with both the type of infection and its severity.
C-reactive protein, also known as acute phase protein, is a protein found in blood plasma whose production increases in response to inflammation and infection. It is mainly produced by the liver. In the event of infection, CRP levels in the blood can increase significantly, even reaching a 1000-fold increase in a single day.
By assessing CRP levels, we can also predict the risk of cardiovascular disease if the test is performed outside the period of active disease state that causes the CRP level to rise. The result of this test allows us to estimate the potential risk of cardiovascular disease.
Test result
The test result is available within a few moments. The strip test is a great choice when you want a quick test result. Your doctor ordered the test before your appointment, but you only remembered about it on the day of your consultation? Purchase a strip test and come to the point of care for the test.
Need a more accurate result? Use the quantitative test.
Elevated CRP levels can also be seen in patients with malignant tumours, particularly in haematological malignancies.
Before taking the test, please note that there are medications (such as statins used to treat high cholesterol) that can affect CRP levels.
