What is the SIBO test?
The hydrogen-methane breath test is used to assess the levels of hydrogen and methane in the exhaled air. It is employed in diagnosing SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), a condition where excessive bacteria in the small intestine can lead to bloating, diarrhea, and other digestive issues.
Who is it for?
The test is intended for adults and children over the age of 10 who suffer from persistent, recurring bloating and diarrhea. It cannot be performed on individuals with hereditary fructose intolerance or those with postprandial hypoglycemia.A referral is required to use the service. How to prepare for the test?
To obtain reliable results, the patient must follow dietary recommendations before the test. A referral from a doctor is also required.
Relative contraindications include taking antibiotics, having undergone colonoscopy, or having an ileostomy within the last 4 weeks before the test.
How does the test work?
The test lasts about 3 hours. Initially, a baseline (zero) measurement is taken on an empty stomach. Then the patient consumes a solution of lactulose, and the measurements continue every 20 minutes for up to 180 minutes. The patient inhales air, holds it for about 15 seconds, and then exhales into a special bag from which air samples are taken for analysis.
How long does it take to get the result and how to interpret it?
The result of the test is provided immediately after completion in the form of a printout. The results should be discussed with the treating doctor, who will interpret them in the context of the patient's health condition.
Additional information
After the test, some discomfort such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or bloating may occur, lasting up to 24 hours.
