What is laser iridotomy?
Laser iridotomy is a modern method of treating glaucoma, which is designed to widen the angle of the isthmus in the eye. It involves making an incision in the iris of the eye. This incision allows the aqueous fluid to flow freely between the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye. The effect is to reduce the resistance to fluid circulation and lower the pressure inside the eyeball. There are two methods of iridotomy: laser (less invasive) and surgical (requires incision of the iris with a scalpel).
For whom is iridotomy intended?
- Primary closed angle glaucoma: Iridotomy is primarily used for this form of glaucoma. It is a first-line procedure that repairs anatomical abnormalities of the eyeball. In most cases, the symptoms pass and the glaucoma is fully cured.
- Periodic angle closure glaucoma: Iridotomy is also used prophylactically to prevent an increase in eye pressure and protect against the risk of an acute glaucoma attack.
- Acute angle-closure glaucoma: For an acute glaucoma attack that requires immediate treatment, iridotomy is one of the procedures.
A referral from a doctor is required for the procedure.
Important information
It is a good idea to attend the procedure with a companion, as you cannot drive for 24 hours after the procedure is performed.
