Lipase is an enzyme specific to the pancreas. Measurements of its activity in serum is used in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic disorders, such as:

• acute and chronic pancreatitis,
• tumors of the pancreas,
• and obstructions of the pancreatic duct,

An increase in enzyme activity occurs in:

• acute pancreatitis,
• acute chronic pancreatitis,
• tumors of the pancreas,
