Hand magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a painless imaging test that provides detailed images of the bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and soft tissues of the hand and wrist. The examination uses a magnetic field and radio waves and does not involve X-ray radiation.
A hand MRI helps identify the cause of pain, swelling, limited range of motion, or numbness, and allows assessment of injury effects and the condition of tissues after treatment.
Who is it for
This examination is intended for people who need detailed diagnostics of the hand or wrist, including in cases of:
- pain, swelling, or stiffness of the hand/wrist,
- injuries (e.g. sprain, suspected ligament or tendon damage, fractures not visible on X-ray),
- numbness of the fingers, tingling, weakened grip strength,
- suspected inflammatory changes (e.g. arthritis, tenosynovitis),
- suspected cysts, nodules, or soft tissue changes,
- follow-up after procedures and during treatment,
- assessment of overuse injuries (e.g. in people performing manual work or practicing sports).
