What is the TMJ MRI
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a painless, non-invasive imaging test that allows for a detailed evaluation of the joints connecting the jaw to the skull. Using magnetic fields and radio waves, it is possible to obtain detailed images of the joints, cartilage, ligaments, and other internal structures.
Who is it for
This test is intended for individuals with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems who may experience pain around the jaw, difficulty opening the mouth, clicking sounds in the joints, or issues related to teeth grinding. TMJ MRI is also recommended in diagnosing conditions such as arthritis, injuries, or degenerative joint diseases.
How to prepare for the test
- Please arrive about 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment time for registration and completion of medical documentation. Patients are invited directly to the Reception at the Radiology Department.
- No referral is required.
- It is recommended to bring along any medical documentation related to the examined area, such as ultrasound reports (printouts), CT scans, or previous MRI results (discs).
- If the patient has implants – joint/endoprostheses, hearing implants, vascular ports, or other foreign bodies resulting from medical procedures, the patient MUST present a certificate stating that there are no contraindications for performing an MRI. This certificate must be issued by the healthcare provider where the implant was placed or the implant/device manufacturer. If such a certificate is not available, the technician has the right to refuse to perform the test.
- For head and eye socket examinations, the use of makeup or hair spray is not allowed as cosmetics may contain metal particles that interfere with the results.
- Regular medications should be taken as recommended by the attending physician.
How the test is performed
- Bring an ID document (ID card, driver's license, passport, or residence card) to the test.
- Pregnant patients should inform the staff about their condition.
- For the test, please wear comfortable clothing without metal parts. Before entering the examination room, you will need to leave your wallet, payment cards, phone, jewelry, belt, etc., in a locked cabinet provided in the department, where you can store your personal items.
- During the test, it is important to remain still. You will maintain constant communication with the medical staff via a microphone. The test lasts about 60 minutes. After the test, you can take medications and drive.
Note! The price of the test on Sundays is higher than on other days.
If you plan to take the test on Sunday, please add it to your cart and pay for the test under the "Sunday Clinic" location.
How long to wait for the results and how to interpret them
