Field of vision - perimetry

When is perimetry performed?

Perimetry can be recommended for various eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts or ocular cancer, but also for Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis or diabetic retinopathy.

For people at risk - the elderly, people with cardiovascular disease or diabetes - regular perimetry examinations are recommended for early detection of eye diseases and prevention of their progression.

It is also a good idea to perform perimetry when symptoms occur, such as:

• darkness in front of the eyes,
• headaches,
• visual disturbances,
• changes in the visual field
• loss of vision.
• This is because the above symptoms may indicate serious problems related to the eyes or nervous system.

Important - Visual field examination (perimetry) is performed on the basis of a referral from an ophthalmologist for patients over 16 y.o.

Perimetry - how does the examination proceed?
The perimetry test uses a special device, called a perimeter, which consists of a lampshade, which contains a board with flashing lights, and a special device for developing the flashing lights. The patient is placed in front of the perimeter and asked to look at one spot in the center of the board. The flashing lights then appear at different locations on the board, and the patient is asked to react when he or she sees them.

How to prepare for the perimetry test?

To get accurate test results, prepare for the test according to the following guidelines:

1. notify your doctor of any ailments or diseases that may affect the test results,
2. wash off makeup thoroughly before the test,
3. remove your glasses or contact lenses before the examination, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor,
4. avoid consuming caffeine, alcohol and smoking before the test, as these substances may affect the test result,
5. if possible, avoid using cosmetics or other substances that may affect the eyes or skin around the eyes.
