Prof. dr hab. d. med. Piotr Małkowski
Prof. dr hab. d. med. Piotr Małkowski is an eminent specialist in the field of surgery, hepatology, and clinical transplantation. He has been working as a doctor for over 40 years. Since 1979, he has been associated with the Medical Academy (currently the Warsaw Medical University).
In 1988, he obtained a doctoral degree in medical sciences based on the work: "Coexistence of portal vein thrombosis with liver cirrhosis in patients with bleeding from esophageal varices." In 1996, he obtained a habilitation degree in medical sciences based on the habilitation thesis: "Thrombosis of the portal system in adults. Etiology, diagnosis, and treatment", and in 2006 he received the title of professor. He currently works at the Clinic of General and Transplant Surgery at the Warsaw Medical University.
The main areas of his scientific and clinical activity include the diagnosis and treatment of patients with liver cirrhosis, esophageal varices, and liver tumors.
Since the 1990s, he has been involved in liver transplantation. He was a member of the team that performed the first successful liver transplant in Poland.
He is the author and co-author of over 220 publications, including 96 in PubMed, 37 chapters in 19 books, and editor of 4 books. He has supervised 2 grants from the European Union related to the diagnosis and treatment of liver tumors and transplantation, as well as a grant from the Mazowiecki Voivodeship Self-Government for the "Screening Program for the Detection of Hepatitis C Virus Infection" worth over 6 million PLN.
He has been awarded several times by the Rector of the Warsaw Medical University and four times by the Minister of Health, including a team award for the implementation of adult liver transplantation program.
He served four terms as the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the Warsaw Medical University and was also a Vice-Rector for Personnel and Organizational Affairs. He is also actively involved in activities outside the University:
- two-time President of the Polish Hepatology Association, National Accreditation Board for Higher Education - Secretary 2001-2005, Deputy Chairman 2005-2008 and 2015-2017;
- 2001-2006 Scientific Council under the Minister of Health 2004-2008;
- State Accreditation Commission - expert;
- Polish HCV Experts Group; Polish HBV Experts Group;
- Polish NAFLD Experts Group;
- Scientific Council LUXMED;
- State Examination Committee in the field of general surgery, public health, and clinical transplantation.
From 2010 to 2012, he was a member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles Committee. He is a member of international scientific societies: HPBA and ILTS, and editor of Annals of Transplantation.
The doctor deals with:
- research on the diagnosis and treatment of various forms of portal hypertension
- etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of various forms of portal vein thrombosis and liver vein thrombosis
- working in a team dealing with liver transplantation since 1986
- diagnosis and surgical treatment of liver tumors
- palliative treatment of liver tumors
