What is Prostate Biopsy
A fine-needle prostate biopsy is a medical procedure in which a sample of cells is taken from the prostate gland using a thin needle, usually under ultrasound (USG) guidance. This test is used to assess the presence of cancer cells or other abnormalities in the prostate.
Who is it for
A prostate biopsy is recommended for men who are suspected of having prostate cancer, usually after previous tests such as a PSA test or prostate ultrasound. It may also be indicated in the case of abnormal results from other diagnostic tests.
How to prepare for the test
The following are required for the biopsy:
- Prior ultrasound examination of the area
- and a referral for the biopsy in paper form.
It is important to maintain personal hygiene on the day of the test.
You should also inform the doctor about any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners.
What are the contraindications for the biopsy
The main contraindications include:
- blood clotting disorders (including hemorrhagic diathesis),
- active infections at the planned puncture site,
- purulent changes in the procedure area
- use of blood-thinning medications, which may require discontinuation prior to the procedure.
- In some cases, severe systemic diseases or difficult localization of the lesion may also be contraindications.
How the test is performed
A fine-needle prostate biopsy is performed through the rectum using a thin needle inserted under USG guidance. The patient lies on their side, and the procedure usually lasts from 10 to 20 minutes. It is relatively minimally invasive but may be associated with slight discomfort.
How long to wait for results and how to interpret them
Prostate biopsy results are usually available within 14 working days. The doctor will assess the samples for the presence of cancer cells.
The result may indicate no changes, the presence of benign changes, or the presence of cancer, which will require further diagnostic testing.
Additional information
Prostate biopsy is a relatively safe procedure, but like any medical intervention, it carries some risks. Possible complications include infections, bleeding, or difficulty urinating. If any concerning symptoms arise, you should immediately contact your doctor.
