What is a resting ECG test?

 Electrocardiography is one of the non-invasive diagnostic tests to assess heart function. It is a safe test that can be performed on anyone - including patients with pacemakers. It consists in a graphical recording of changes in myocardial cell potentials during its contraction and diastole.

Course of the examination

The examination is performed in supine position. Electrodes - 6 on the chest and 4 on the legs - are attached to previously skimmed areas.

When to perform resting ECG?

Indications for the test are:

• chest pain
• palpitations
• shortness of breath
• dizziness
• arterial hypertension
• early diagnosis of heart disease
• prophylactically after the age of 40
• when monitoring pacemaker function

Preparation for the resting ECG examination

The examination does not charecterize special preparation. It is advisable to arrive 15 minutes earlier, wearing comfortable clothes that allow easy exposure of the chest and ankles where the electrodes will be attached. Those with lush hair in these areas should consider removing it. 

The day before the test, it is not recommended to consume alcohol and do intense physical activity, and on the day of the test to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes. Patients taking medications (especially those controlling heart rhythm) should inform the person performing the examination.

Contraindications

The examination has no contraindications-it is completely safe and can be performed even in a patient with a pacemaker.
