A temporal bone MRI without contrast is a painless and non-invasive imaging examination that allows for a detailed assessment of the inner and middle ear structures as well as the surrounding nerves and tissues. The examination uses a magnetic field and radio waves and does not involve X-ray radiation or contrast agents. This allows the doctor to identify possible causes of hearing loss, dizziness, or tinnitus.
Who it is for
The examination is intended for people who:
- have hearing problems or sudden hearing loss,
- experience tinnitus or ringing in the ears,
- suffer from recurrent or severe dizziness,
- have balance disorders of unclear origin,
- have had head or ear area injuries,
- require diagnostics recommended by an ENT specialist, neurologist, or another medical specialist.
How to prepare for the examination
- It is recommended to bring all previous test results, such as X-rays, CT scans, or other examinations that may be helpful in diagnosis.
- Before the examination, you must remove jewelry and all metal objects, and avoid wearing clothing with metal elements.
- If the patient has implants – such as limb or joint endoprostheses, hearing implants, vascular ports, or any other foreign bodies resulting from medical procedures – the patient MUST present a certificate confirming no contraindications to undergoing an MRI examination. The certificate must be issued by the medical facility where the implant was placed and/or by the manufacturer of the implant/device. If such a certificate is not provided, the technician has the right to refuse to perform the examination.
- No referral is required for this examination.
