Abdominal X-ray - what does it detect? 

Abdominal radiography is used to diagnose diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys and ureter. It can detect kidney stones, intestinal obstruction, abdominal hernia and abdominal cancer, among others.

Course of abdominal X-ray

During an abdominal X-ray, an electroradiologist technician takes a series of X-rays using a special device. It is important to cooperate with the specialist and follow his instructions. It is not allowed to move while the images are being taken. At the request of the person performing the examination, you must also hold your breath for a few seconds - this will avoid blurring the image. How long does an abdominal X-ray take?

An abdominal X-ray usually takes a few minutes. The duration of the examination may increase if additional projections are necessary to obtain a more accurate image. 

Does an abdominal X-ray hurt? 

No, an abdominal X-ray is a painless examination. The patient may only feel a slight discomfort due to the position they must remain in during the examination. 

Is an abdominal X-ray dangerous? 

During an abdominal X-ray, the patient is exposed to a minimal dose of X-ray radiation, which should not have adverse health consequences. However, radiological examinations should not be performed too often. It is recommended that they be performed only when they are necessary to make a diagnosis or monitor treatment. 

Can abdominal X-rays be performed during pregnancy? 

Radiological examinations are not indicated in pregnant women, but they can be performed if the doctor, after a thorough assessment of the risks and benefits, considers it reasonable. Special precautions are then applied.

Do I need a referral for an abdominal X-ray? 

Yes, the X-ray examination is performed only on the basis of a referral received from a doctor.

Preparation for the examination 

In order for the radiological image to be of good quality, the patient must properly prepare for the abdominal X-ray. Instructions will be given by the referring physician for the examination. Recommendations are generally as follows: 

• 1-2 days before the examination, avoid heavy, bloating dishes, dark bread, raw fruits and vegetables and carbonated beverages. 
• On the day before the test, take a preparation with simethicone (such as Espumisan) in a regimen of 2 capsules 3 times a day. 
• You should appear for the examination on an empty stomach (at least 6 hours after your last meal) and after having a bowel movement. 
• On the day of the examination, one should not smoke or chew gum. 

Following these recommendations is important, as gas and fecal masses in the gastrointestinal tract can obscure the radiological image and prevent diagnosis. 

Medical staff should be informed about medications taken (especially those containing bismuth), barium allergy, and, in the case of women, also about pregnancy and an inserted intrauterine spiral
