Total and fractionated bilirubin

Determining direct (water-soluble) bilirubin levels in combination with total bilirubin measurement allows for the identification of the type of jaundice by assessing the predominance of unconjugated or conjugated bilirubin (van den Bergh test).

When included with a general urine test (bilirubin and urobilinogen levels) and liver enzyme activity assessment, it can differentiate types of jaundice with high probability.

Dietary errors may cause a temporary, slight increase in bilirubin levels.

• The collection should be done in the morning.
• Before the test, the patient should remain at rest for 10 – 15 minutes (seated position). Physical exertion, also moderate e.g. walking, climbing stairs, can change the result values laboratory test.

In the event of improper preparation for the examination, The result obtained will not be fully reliable.
