What is Uroflowmetry
Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive test that measures the parameters of the urine stream while the patient urinates naturally into a special device called a uroflowmeter. The examination allows for the assessment of the volume of urine passed, its flow rate, and the duration of urination, as well as a graphical analysis of the urine flow curve. Uroflowmetry results are essential in diagnosing lower urinary tract disorders, such as bladder emptying problems, urinary incontinence, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Who is it for
- You have a weak or intermittent urine stream.
- You find it hard to start urinating or you wake at night to urinate.
- You feel your bladder does not empty completely.
- There is a suspicion of prostate enlargement (in men) or urethral stricture.
- You need to monitor the effects of urological treatment.
How to prepare
- 1.5 to 2 hours before the test, empty your bladder and then drink 2 glasses of still water. Please do not urinate until the test is performed. Individuals who have difficulty filling their bladder in this way should arrive at the Medical Centre earlier and fill their bladder while waiting near the examination room.
- Bring previous test results (e.g., ultrasound, urinalysis) and a list of current medications.
- If you have infection symptoms (pain, burning, fever), contact us; the test may need rescheduling.
- No fasting or diet change is required.
How the test is performed
- The staff explains the steps and asks you to urinate into the device — a uroflowmeter.
- The device automatically measures time, flow rate, and volume.
- The test takes a few minutes and is completely painless.
- You can return to normal activities right after.
How long for results and how to interpret them
The result is available immediately as a printout/report. A doctor (usually a urologist) interprets it together with your symptoms, history, and other tests. Self-interpretation can be misleading — book a consultation.
Additional information
- The test is safe and uses no radiation.
- The whole visit typically takes 15–20 minutes.
- If needed, the doctor may order a post-void bladder ultrasound to assess residual urine.
