What is a thyroid ultrasound with elastography?

Thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that evaluates tissues for abnormalities such as thyroid goiter, inflammatory and cancerous lesions. This test uses ultrasound waves that bounce off body structures. 

Elastography, on the other hand, is a modern technique used in conjunction with ultrasound. It makes it possible to assess the elasticity (hardness) of tissues. This is because it is worth knowing that pathologically altered tissues in many cases have a different cohesiveness (hardness, elasticity) than healthy tissues.

Ultrasound with elastography provides additional information compared to standard thyroid ultrasound. It makes it possible not only to detect nodules, but also to determine whether they are benign or cancerous. 

Course of thyroid ultrasound with elastography

Thyroid ultrasound with elastography is a painless and safe examination. A modern ultrasound machine with elastography function is used to perform it. 

What does the examination look like? The patient exposes the examined area and assumes the position indicated by the doctor. The doctor places a special gel on the head of the camera, applies the device to the surface of the patient's body and moves it over the examined area, applying light pressure. At the same time, the specialist analyzes the image appearing on the monitor. 

The examination does not take long - it generally takes a few minutes or so to complete.

• Thyroid ultrasound with elastography does not require preparation from the patient. For your own comfort on the day of the examination, it is advisable only to put on clothes that allow easy exposure of the examined area. 
• A referral for the examination is not required.
