The duplex doppler ultrasound scan of the arteries of the lower limbs is used to assess the condition of the arterial vessels of the lower limbs and the blood flow in the arteries. Among other things, the examination checks the patency and capacity of the arteries.
The examination is used in diagnostics of:
- stenosis,
- obstruction,
- aneurysms,
- arteriovenous fistulas,
- dialysis fistulas,
- vascular malformations.
Symptoms that may be an indication for the examination include leg pain on exertion, swelling, numbness and tingling in the legs, as well as a feeling of heaviness.
The examination uses the Doppler effect to assess the speed and direction of blood flow in the blood vessels. This makes it possible to detect abnormalities related to the cardiovascular system.
The duplex doppler ultrasound examination of the arteries of the lower limbs is similar to other ultrasound examinations. The doctor places the head of the device on the patient’s body and moves it around while assessing the image seen on the monitor. The examination is painless, non-invasive and completely safe.
