What does the examination consist of?
Gynecological ultrasound is used to evaluate the structures of the small pelvis. During the examination, it is possible to evaluate, among other things, the mucosa of the uterine cavity, the endometrium, the cervix, the ovaries and the sinus of Douglas. During the examination, it is possible to detect abnormalities such as cysts, myomas or cancerous lesions. For this reason, it is recommended that the examination also be performed once a year in healthy women.
Ultrasound examination uses the phenomenon of reflection of ultrasound waves from the structure of organs - it is a non-invasive technique, and the examination itself is safe and generally does not cause pain.
When to perform a gynecological ultrasound?
The examination is performed, among other things, in the case of:
- abnormal bleeding from the genital tract;
- menstrual disorders;
- abdominal and lower abdominal pain;
- changes in the ovaries and uterus (such as polyps, endometrial proliferation, cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome, myomas);
- abnormal structure of the reproductive organs;
- infertility and miscarriages;
- prophylactic - standard once a year.
What does the examination look like?
Gynecological ultrasound is performed using a transvaginal probe protected by a disposable latex sheath. The probe is covered with a special gel, which allows a good quality image to be obtained. The doctor inserts the probe into the patient's vagina and evaluates the image that appears on the monitor.
The examination takes about 15-20 minutes.
How to prepare for the examination?
Before the test, take care of the hygiene of the intimate area (washing with water is enough). The bladder should be emptied. For the examination it is worth taking the results of a previous gynecological ultrasound, as well as other examinations of the reproductive organs, if they were performed.
The timing of the examination is significant:
- Patients of childbearing age: the examination is best performed between the 5th and 10th day of the cycle.
- Postmenopausal patients taking HRT: 6 to 10 days after taking the last pill.
- Postmenopausal patients taking HRT in sequential therapy: by the 10th day of the cycle.
- Postmenopausal patients taking HRT in continuous therapy: the timing of the test does not matter.
Important information:
- A referral for the examination is not required.
- The result of the examination (medical description and photo) is available immediately.
- The examination can be performed through the rectum or abdominal integuments (using a different probe) - for example, in patients who have not started intercourse. In the case of examination through the abdominal shell, the bladder should be filled (this is necessary to visualize the organs).
