Enlargement and soreness of the cervical lymph nodes is the result of an immune system reaction. It is a common symptom of diseases of organs located in the neck area (tonsils, pharynx, sinuses, teeth, ears, salivary glands, thyroid, larynx).
The cause of enlarged lymph nodes is most often inflammation caused by a viral or bacterial infection. However, enlarged lymph nodes can also be a symptom of cancer (e.g. leukaemia or lymphoma).
Ultrasound of the cervical lymph nodes is performed in case of abnormalities related to the size, shape or consistency of the lymph nodes, such as their persistent enlargement without apparent cause.
